is a privately held, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island based corporation. We have been involved in the companion animal/family pet business since 1995, starting as a small pet store, and growing into a one-stop-shop for pets and pet care supplies. In 2003, Snookumspets.com began focusing solely on providing – puppies and specialty kittens – to families across the Atlantic provinces and beyond.

We are licensed annually by The Province of P.E.I. and regularly inspected by The Department of Agriculture for P.E.I as provided for in THE COMPANION ANIMAL ACT OF P.E.I. Under this Act we are also subject to inspections by members or employees of the P.E.I. Humane Society, and further, under this Act we are also subject to inspections by Veterinarians as selected for the purpose by The Department of Agriculture for P.E.I. Our experienced and knowledgeable staff are dedicated to ensuring that puppies and kittens receive the very best care and attention. Our kennel area is constructed to ensure the very best accommodations and 100% sanitation for our puppies and kittens.

Our kennels are completely lined with the same fiberglass sheeting used in our local hospital’s emergency area for easy and quick disinfection to ensure a safe and disease-free environment for our puppies and kittens. Our state-of-the-art air-flow system, complete with heating and air conditioning, ensures the proper air quality and comfortable temperature, summer or winter, for our puppies and kittens.

2. Does Snookumspets.com breed companion animals?
Snookumspets.com does not breed any of our puppies or kittens. Instead, Snookumspets.com has created a network of quality breeders throughout Eastern Canada to be able to provide a number of different breeds to Atlantic Canadian families. Each breeder is inspected by Snookumspets.com’s owner, Bud Wheatley, and evaluated on its:
• Premises
• Operations
• Practices
• Knowledge base

If a breeder is successful, they are invited to join Snookumspets.com’s network of breeders. Currently, we have breeders from Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Gaspe Region of Quebec.

3. Why did Snookumspets.com create a breeders’ network?
Snookumspets.com created a breeders’ network in order to provide Atlantic Canadian families with quality pets on a timely basis and for a reasonable price. Due to the large geographic area and the many rural communities across Atlantic Canada, families were finding it increasingly difficult to find the right pet for them.

4. Does Snookumspets.com support puppy mills?
Absolutely not. Snookumspets.com does not condone the operations of puppy or kitten mills and under no circumstances would we deal with them in any way.

Because we have taken the time to develop our network of breeders, we have confidence in the quality and health of all of the puppies and kittens we sell. Members of our breeders’ network are inspected frequently by our owner – every time a new litter of puppies or kittens is ready – to ensure breeders continue to maintain quality operations.


5. Are your puppies and specialty kittens registered?
Snookumspets.com is proud to provide companion animals to families across Atlantic Canada. While we do not sell registered (papered) puppies or kittens, many of them could have been registered (papered) due to their high quality parents. We are able to sell companion animals – family pets – for less because our puppies and specialty kittens are not registered.

6. What sort of support can customers expect once a family pet is purchased?
Snookumspets.com's customers are able to rely on our knowledge and experience, as well as our intimate knowledge of our breeders' facilities. Snookumspets.com is proud to offer families well-bred, healthy, and well adjusted puppies and kittens.

The vast majority of our breeders are "hobby breeders," where the puppies or kittens are born and raised in a private residence with a mom, dad, their children and a great deal of love. In our view, this is the ideal place from which to start the puppy or kitten's life, especially for a family pet.

We also have professional breeders that specialize in one or two breeds and provide
Snookumspets.com with the registered (or registerable) breeding stock.

Finally, we, on occasion, get puppies and kittens from a private home where the litter was born to the family pet without any plans of being a breeder. We still do our quality control inspections to ensure that the puppies or kittens are healthy and well-adjusted.

7. What are Snookumspets.com’s methods for ensuring the health of its puppies and specialty kittens?
All of our puppies and specialty kittens are fully inspected by our owner before being selected by Snookumspets.com for our customers. Once they arrive at our kennel, they are carefully inspected based on our Standard Care Protocol. Our protocol ensures each and every puppy and kitten receives the highest standard of care. Elements of our Standard Care Protocol include:
• Weight checked and recorded
• Flea and mite bathed as precaution
• Examined for ear mites and other common conditions
• Dewormed with two types of dewormers
• Second thorough examination by another staff member
• Veterinarian check-up
• Receives first needle (for Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza and Parvo Virus)
• Treated for Coccidia
• Receives Bordetella nasal shot (for puppies), if necessary, to help prevent kennel cough
• Treated for Giardia (Beaver Fever) (for puppies)

Once they have had a thorough check-up and received all necessary vaccinations and care, our puppies and kittens are then continuously monitored to ensure their health and comfort. Caring and knowledgeable staff pay particular and close attention to be sure our companion animals make healthy and steady weight gains.

All puppies are housed with their litter mates only and either alone or with a maximum of two others. They enjoy a comfortable, properly sized, dry and clean kennel during their stay, and have fresh food and clean water at all times.

8. What happens if a home cannot be found for one of your pets?
Every puppy and kitten at Snookumspets.com is guaranteed a new home. We believe that every puppy and kitten deserves a good home and we work to make a match for our pets with people looking for a new furry family member. We have never, nor will we ever, put an animal down because a home cannot be found. Taking puppies and kittens into our care is an enormous responsibility and we take it very seriously.
9. How do you ensure puppies and kittens stay healthy?
Before a puppy or kitten leaves our kennels to join their new family, they are again completely scrutinized by our experienced staff. Our staff again check their weight, trim their nails and check their ears to be sure they’re healthy. They also receive another flea and mite bath to be sure they are ready for their new home.

10. I don’t live in Charlottetown. How can I purchase a puppy or kitten?
Snookumspets.com will ensure delivery to almost any region in Atlantic Canada and beyond.

By land, puppies and kittens are delivered throughout New Brunswick and Nova Scotia in our company’s climate-controlled van. Puppies and kittens travel to their new homes safely and in comfort. When the driver arrives to deliver your new puppy or kitten, he (usually Snookumspets.com’s owner) will again examine the pet to be sure that it has arrived safely and in good health.

If a puppy or kitten is being flown to meet its new family, Snookumspets.com makes all delivery arrangements to ensure that the new pet arrives safely and in good health. We ensure that the total flight time and in-transit times are reasonable for a young animal and that the air cargo compartment has adequate heat for the puppy or kitten.

Once the puppy or kitten arrives, we require customers to phone us on our toll-free number within an hour of the pet’s arrival. This way, we can ensure the puppy or kitten has been picked up safely and that the flight has not adversely affected the new arrival.

11. What do I need to know before I purchase a pet?
Purchasing a pet is a serious responsibility. Because we want to be sure that our puppies and kittens are going into homes that will care for them and where they will thrive, we require customers to sign a contract stating that they understand the responsibility of pet ownership and that they promise to care for the pet and its health.

Along with the puppy or kitten’s Health Record, customers are also provided with a two-page puppy or kitten information sheet on caring for your new pet. Because puppies and kittens are young, they require extra care and attention – very much like a baby does – to be sure they remain healthy. Our puppy and kitten care information sheets outline areas in which to pay special attention, especially as the pet is adjusting to its new home.

Finally, when customers purchase a pet, Snookumspets.com requires that they listen to an information session on the dos and don’ts of caring for a puppy or kitten. We want to be sure that the pet remains healthy and, in our experience, a combination of written contract, printed information sheets and a verbal information session works the best in ensuring that new pet owners know and understand the information they need to care for their young pet.

12. Is there any support available to new pet owners after they purchase a puppy or kitten?
New pet owners are encouraged to call us first on our toll-free number or our emergency line if, for any reason, they are concerned about the health of their new puppy or kitten. This service is available twenty four hours a day and seven days a week. All customers are advised to call regardless of the time, day or night, if they are worried or concerned. We can immediately assist and do the worrying for them.

Approximately twenty four hours after the puppy or kitten has left our care we do a follow-up call to our customer to ensure all is going fine with the new arrival. This conversation includes a list of questions requiring a satisfactory answer to also enable us to assess the new arrival’s stress level and how well it is coping in its new environment and with all its new found friends. If, for any reason, we feel that further follow-ups are necessary then we do so until the new arrival is one hundred per cent comfortably settled in to its new home with its new family.
13. Why does a new pet owner need to closely monitor the puppy’s or kitten’s health when it arrives?
Snookumspets.com assures you that you will receive a healthy puppy or specialty kitten. However, stress, and sometimes extreme stress, on a new puppy or kitten being bathed, transported, and entering a new home with other animals and young children causes the puppy’s or kitten’s immune system to drop to very low levels for a few days.

While its immune system is down, it can be more susceptible to illnesses. This means that the new pet may develop an illness that it normally would not. It may get sick and, for young animals, this can be very serious or even life-threatening.

For that reason, we require our customers to make the transition into the new home as easy for the new puppy or kitten as possible to lessen the effects of stress. This includes ensuring that all members of the family give the puppy lots of space and to handle their small bodies with extreme care. New pet owners should closely monitor how much the puppy eats and drinks to be sure that it gets enough of each. Any customer with a concern about the new pet’s health should immediately call Snookumspets.com’s emergency line, day or night.

On rare occasions, a puppy or kitten may arrive at its new home with a previously undetected condition or illness. If this is the case, Snookumspets.com will take responsibility to correct the situation or even replace the pet should it pass away. Please refer to your purchasing contract for more information.
